ok so i have some energy before bed, so i thought i would take a crack at this:

i started on january 7th, 2008 and this is what i wanted to accomplish:

- it was just a basic life style change
- i decided to eat more frequently and cut out all unnecessary foods, i.e. junk food, fried foods, fast foods, with the exception of swiss chalet and sushi
- at this point i started to contemplate quitting smoking but didnt become successful until Feb 1st.
- so i started introducing a lot of different things into my diet: congees, soups, and lots of greens
- i already didnt eat red meat so the good majority of my protein cam from chicken and lentils
- early on in my change i was eating lots of fruits: more so because i didnt really know what to substitute my fruit intake with

so this is how i started, i really just committed myself to a life style change and that sounds cliche but for me it was just about being over all more healthy...

in my next bit i will talk about the specific things that i did to my diet and my training from the 4 - 8 month mark...

Smoking is a hard thing to quit, trust me, I know. But I know you can do it if you really want it. If I can, then you can.

i am really tired so i think i will address my personal goals now.

So when i started one of the big things of course was to be more healthy in general and of course i knew that i was overweight so as a result i knew that i would loose weight.

alright, so here is my diet:

i am going to try to break it down but to be honest i didnt really put too many restrictions on my diet. however there were basic guidelines that i did follow:

1. no fast food (execpt for swiss and sushi)
2. no fried food
3. no candy/chips/chocolate (junk food)
4. no eating two hours before bed time
5. hydrate!!!
6. no cola, not even diet - limited juice
7.controlled fruit intake
8. no ALCOHOL

ok, so those are some of the guidelines that i followed; i have to set up a tobi right now so I will be back later to day to give you a sample of what my daily food intake was..

holler.

ok, so my typical daily:

10AM - breakfast: congee/soup

11AM - snack: yogurt

12PM - lunch: chicken/rice/veggies

2PM - snack: fruit

4PM - pre-dinner: salad

6PM - dinner: chicken/rice/veggies

8PM - veggies or a light snack

ok, so it doesnt really sound that interesting but my eating is very bland - i am not big on salt or sauces.

but the key to my diet: portion sizes

I have these pyrex lunch containers that can hold anything its about about two cups worth of food and i typically fill them up to the top with whatever i am eating (not salad though - i eat as much as i want for regularity) and I try to pack three of them a day to get me through the 7ish hours i am work. so i am pretty much eating every two hours but the portions are tiny.

so you can also view my eating schedule like this:

10AM - pyrex

11AM - snack

12PM - pyrex

2PM - snack

4PM - pyrex

6PM - dinner plate

8PM - small snack if i need to eat

ok, so thats basically it you can be as creative as you like with what you put in the pyrex but i just follow the rules in my previous post.

also, i must add that i dont eat sandwiches any more more so because i am also eating according to my readings in chinese medicine. for my body disposition bread and flour are not so good for me and i try to stay away from cold cuts cause of preservatives/sodium. sooo this worked for me but you may have your own variation. also i do eat rice but my servings are about a half a cup.

when i cook food i rarely use added salt and if i do i try to use sea salt, i limit my soya sauce (sodium), so in general i watch my salt intake because i dont like the feeling of being bloated.

i also try to cook as much as i can at home because i like to know exactly what is in my food. sometimes when eating out i find the food very salty. again these are my dietary concerns based on my body type.

what else, if i get really hungry between meals i try to fill up on salad with some sort of protein.

i am a sucker for chips and fried foods, so i am not going to lie over the past three months i have cheated but my CHEATING = like 5 chips. no more "cheat meals" which is what i used to call them before which ended up being eating way too much bad foods i.e. a plate of nachos or something. also i love potatoes so i substitute my rice with potatoes but basically only one source of carbs.

also i have removed my "i will start tomorrow" excuse and accepted that i can eat like 10 or so fries but thats it. so i have fulfilled my craving but know i have done it without being gluttonous (is that the right word?)

ok wow this was a long post...enjoy.

if you have questions holler at me.

good job jay!
it is good to see that you are limiting the salt intake, as i do not add much, if any, salt to my foods. I eat eggs plain, same with alot of other foods. Not to mention, it is great for your blood pressure.

You should be adding some more complex sources of protein in your diet though. Try nuts (almonds are the best as they have almost zero salt as opposed to regular peanuts), fish, milk, peanutbutter just as a few examples. You can mix some nuts in with your yogart or have them after. It's a great easy way to get some much needed protein!

And it is good to hear you admit that you cheated or aren't totally eliminating cheating as a possibility but within reason. That way you can maintain a lifestyle you like but all while working towards your new one of being FIT and healthy!!

Anonymous said...

ahh, good point about the complex proteins, i do eat fish at least a couple times a week in place of chicken because i dont eat red meat. unfortunately i am allergic to nuts so thats puts that out of the question...

but good point, milk is mixed in with the occasional fruit drink (magic bullet...woot) but have to also watch my dairy intake due to my body predispositions for chinese medicine...

but i will def. look into that and look for more of those sources...

jay said...

chinese medicine!!! yooo.. your drinking that yuky black liquid?? lol i should ask my mom to make you some!! haha you'll never eat it again haha

i just read your post on robs.

Try eating eggs for breakfast. Easy simple fast. Excellent source of protein and omega 3!!! Also it packs a huge energy boost. Not to mention all whole bunch of other stuff.. Boiled would be your best bet as it doesnt add any fat as frying or scrambled would. Milk, pure oj no sugar/water added, whole grain toast, fruits (although your trying to limit those but more fruit doesn't hurt).

Jay, I suggest you subscribing to menshealth magazine. They have some great nutritional information in every issue including foods to eat, foods to avoid, cooking techniques, variations and mix and matching, etc. only 30$ for two years if you know how to ask the sales person on the phone for a deal!! lol

try this book. Muscle Chow by Gregg Avedon. The Jan/Feb issue of menshealth had an excerpt of the book and it contained a bunch of really neat and fun food ideas.

hey jay, thanks for the tips i will def. take them into consideration.

right now my diet is modeled under chinese medicine and I am working with my TCD because I am going through a pretty big change right now. With the combination of quitting smoking, drinking, loosing weight my body is going through quite a healing process so i am very hesitant to test out new foods on my body because of the polarities of food. i try to eat things that go well with my highly yang body. Until i get past these healing phases i think i am going to stick to what i know works. when i am closer to my healing point then i will slowly start to introduce things back into my diet. under the principles of chinese medicine when my body is in balance i should be able to eat whatever i want...not fast food and stuff but things that are yang even though my body tends to lean more to the yang side.

eggs unfortunately are yang and i do eat them but have to be careful with my intake given my body predispositions and the link it has to my eczema.

so i read the synopsis of the book Men's Health Muscle Chow: More Than 150 Meals to Feed Your Muscles and Fuel Your Workouts (Paperback) - however there is lots of mention of protein shakes and i dont drink protein shakes - gout. i think this is great but like i was saying before this is more about a holistic life style for me. i think all your suggestions are great, i would be all over them if i wanted to train really hard but in fact i am more on a spirtual/mental/body healing process right now. its sounds odd and the more i talk about it the crazier i sound. because of my weight loss you may assume that i spend hours in the gym but in actuality i dont really train aside from walking and playing sports. the reason why i am loosing weight is because i am trying to achieve balance in my body and a part of that is loosing weight.

so, in the end i think at some point i will be ready to train again and i think that the knowledge that i can get from mens health with be amazing, so i will def. subscribe.

however, i think my diet will always reflect chinese medicine most in part because i believe, lol.

but if there is anything that i got from your posts is that there is always room to be knowledgeable and for my next steps i will be reading nutrition text books that i have in my study.

a side note: regular visits to your MD are great, i.e. get blood working done, i did and everything checks out.

thanks for the tips jay they were great and you have got me thinking about reading my nutrition text books downstairs that are collecting dust.

Thanks! I've been working out very hard! 5-6 days a week! I only started the weight program for 2 weeks with Rob. Its different and soo difficult but I like the change! I only do turbo when I'm at home and need to do some cardio!

Wow, good job on the diet. And congrats on being so strict! I totally admired what you did at BLUE!! i don't know how you did it!My weakness is anything sweet (ie. brownies and ice cream lol). I'm trying really hard with the diet, I'm trying NOT to cheat until my trip on May 8th. So far so good. But i'm a sucker for carbs I really am!

I can't believe no more diet pop! That I can't do. And I refuse to lol. I'm just to addicted!! its so bad i know...
